George Carroll, 81, Salina, died Tuesday, November 2, 2004. Mr. Carroll was born Feb. 22, 1923, in Hallowell, to George Carroll and Anna (Gorman) Carroll. He was raised in Chapman by his mother's sisters, Mary and Gertie Gorman, and his mother's brother, Tommy Gorman. He graduated from Chapman High School in 1941 and served as senior class president. He served in the U.S. Navy as a radioman second class from 1943 to 1946 aboard USS Hopkins (destroyer minesweeper) in the South Pacific. He was educated at Rockhurst College, Northwestern University, University of Oklahoma and University of Iowa. He taught radio/television and speech at Kansas State University from 1954 to 1961. He was director of public information at Marymount College from 1961 to 1988, where he edited the college newsletter, Profile, for 25 years. He also later served as sports information director. He was a longtime contributor to the Northwestern Kansas Register and longtime emcee for the Salina Municipal Band and Salina Symphony Pop Concerts. He was former president of Salina Area Retired School Personnel and a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus. He was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Mary Jeanne (Lorson) Carroll, in 1992. Survivors include a son, David of Beaumont, Texas; a daughter, Christina Carroll of Houston; a brother, Bob of Chapman; a niece, Connie Widmer and husband Firmin of Cincinnati; and a brother-in-law, Bob Lorson and wife Wanda of Bartlesville, Okla. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Salina. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Chapman. A vigil will be at 6 p.m. Friday at Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. Eighth, Salina 67401. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sisters of St. Joseph, Concordia, or Hospice of Salina. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the mortuary. |
