Wilna Jane "Willie" Crawford, of Salina, Kansas and Peoria, Arizona, loving and devoted wife and mother, affectionate grandmother and loyal friend, passed away peacefully into the loving hands of God and his angels on August 31, 2004 surrounded by loved ones. She fought a long, courageous battle against Alzheimer's disease. She will be forever remembered as a sweet and loving presence in the lives of her family and friends. One of Willie's greatest gifts was an ability to create beautiful and comfortable surroundings. She will be fondly remembered by all who met her as a charming and gracious hostess. Her home hosted many gatherings including family weddings, bridge groups, sewing circles, coffee klatches and social events through the years. Willie went to join her parents, Charles Ray Knight and Florence Kesselring Knight and her brothers Marvin Ray and Glenn Elwood. Left behind were: Bob, her personal knight in shining armor and husband of 57 years, and two daughters, Jann and Nancy, and their husbands Tom Rudkin and Bill Calderwood. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Heather Rudkin, Chris, Adam and Will Calderwood, and Lisa Calderwood Hereder; her sister and brother-in-law, Irene and William Merrill Mohney; sister-in-law Lois Knight Hein; five of Bob's brothers and sisters and their spouses; and many loving nieces and nephews, especially Karen Dunlap, Sally Knight, and Connie Walsh. Willie was born in Topeka on October 21, 1926 and graduated from Holliday Junior High and Topeka High School. She and Bob were high school sweethearts and married in 1947. After earning her PHT (Pushed Hubby Through) at the University of Kansas, she and Bob moved to Salina in 1949. They loved to travel, visiting six continents, surviving earthquakes and tornadoes, and barely avoiding hurricanes and invasions. Willlie was a member of the Twentieth Century Women's Club, the Asbury Hospital Auxiliary, and many bridge and handcraft groups. She loved to golf and play cards. Bob and Willie both volunteered with the Salina Silver Sabres Drum and Bugle Corps in the late 1960s and early 1970s. They are members of the Salina Country Club. Special thanks to our angel caregivers, Gloria Freeman, Margo Dimitris, and Judy Stephenson, and the Sun Health Hospice staff who helped us take loving care of her. Services will be held at First United Methodist Church, 123 N. 8th St., Salina, on Friday Sept. 3 at 10:30 AM, with visitation at the Church at 9:30. Internment will be at Memorial Park Cemetary in Topeka. Graveside services will be held at 2:15 PM.
