Mary C. Jarvis, 82, Salina, died Wednesday, March 31, 2004. Mrs. Jarvis was born Mary M. Cheney on Nov. 17, 1921, in Salina. She was a teacher of Humanities and English at Salina Central High School from 1967-1987. She attended Mills College from 1939 to 1941 and graduated from the University of Kansas in 1943. She was a member of Salina Heritage Commission, Salina Arts and Humanities Commission, Salina Bi-Center Commission, Salina Community Theatre Board, Salina Public Library Board, Saline County Historical Society, Community Chest, Association of Women Voters Board and Association of University Women. She was a Smoky Hill River Festival volunteer and Salina Art Center volunteer. She was a Phi Beta Kappa and a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority. She designed the residence that became Lakewood Lodge and sold the surrounding 160 acres to the City of Salina that became Lakewood Park in 1967. She enjoyed cooking and gardening and was a dog lover. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. R.E. Cheney and Emily "Koma" Cheney; and a son, Jeff. Survivors include two sons, Mark of Lenexa and J.C. of Salina; a daughter, Joan Brown of Prairie Village; a sister, Priscilla Slaughter of Salina; her aunt, Billie Matzen of Wichita; seven grandchildren; and her golden retriever, Sam. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Roselawn Memorial Park, Salina. Memorials may be made to Salina Animal Shelter or Salina Public Library. There will be no visitation. Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. Eighth, Salina 67401, is handling arrangements. |
