Mr. Mathews was born February 12, 1926, in Marion. He worked for the Holsum Bakery in Salina for 23 years and then worked for the City of Salina from 1965-1986. He was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1432 of Salina and attended Grand Avenue United Methodist Church. He served with the U.S. Army in World War II.

He married Betty Hoffman on June 13, 1943, at Marion.

He was preceded in death by a brother and three sisters.

Survivors include his wife, Betty of the home; a son, Dennis and wife Jan of Salina; two daughters, Shirley Mathews and Deby Muller and husband Steve, all of Salina; a special friend, James Jackson of Salina; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday in Gypsum Hill Cemetery, Salina, the Rev. Nancy Crowl officiating. Military honors will be by VFW Post 1432, Salina.
