Master Sgt. Grady William McDaniel Jr., 74, Salina, died Friday, December 3, 2004. Mr. McDaniel was born Dec. 3, 1930, in Thomaston, Ga. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1950 and served in the infantry, military police and military intelligence branches. He was a 23-year veteran serving in Germany, Puerto Rico, Canal Zone, Korea, Vietnam and various stateside assignments. He received The Bronze Star, Purple Heart with two Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Commendation Medal with one Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster, Good Conduct Medal with five Bronze Loops, Meritorious Unit Emblem, Army of Occupation Medal-Germany, National Defense Service Medal with one Bronze Star, Korean Service Medal with one Silver Star, Vietnam Service Medal with one Bronze Star and one Silver Star, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal-Korea, Combat Infantryman Badge, United Nations Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm Unit Citation Badge and Sharpshooter Badge with Rifle Bar. He retired in April 1973 at Martin Army Hospital, Fort Benning, Ga. He married Anna Jean Vangieson in February 1973 at Jacksonville, Fla. While living in Jacksonville, Fla., and later Fort Worth, Texas, he was active in the Big Brothers program. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, with Blue Lodge membership at Lawton, Okla., and Consistory at McAlester, Okla. He was also a member of Red Baron Ambucs and United Methodist Church of the Cross. He was preceded in death by three sisters. Survivors include his wife, Anna Jean; three sisters, Myrtle Awtrey of Smyrna, Ga., Genesta Duncan of Colquitt, Ga., Joyce Hensen of Conyers, Ga., and many nieces and nephews. The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Church of the Cross United Methodist, 1600 Rush, Salina 67401. Private inurnment will be in Crest Lawn Memorial Park, Atlanta. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the church. There will be no visitation. The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. Eighth, Salina 67401, is handling arrangements. |
