Mr. Nelson was born June 13, 1929, in Moline, Ill. He was a 20-year veteran of the Army Big Red One, formerly of Junction City. He was a master sergeant serving in the Korean and Vietnam wars. He was awarded the Medal of Honor. After retirement, he worked in maintenance at Kansas State University-Manhattan.

His wife, Marion A., died in 2000.

Survivors include two sons, James D. of Milan, Ill., and Larry L. of Salina; and five grandchildren.

There will be no services or visitation. The body will be cremated. Inurnment will be private in the Fort Riley Post Cemetery.
