Baten L. Young, 89, Salina, died Saturday, April 24, 2004. Mr. Young was born Oct. 26, 1914, in Wickenburg, Ariz. He was the first male principal in the Salina School District, retiring after 29 years. He graduated from the University of Redlands in California in 1941 and the University of Kansas in 1951. He was a member of the Reserve Officers Association, Masonic Lodge, Salina Kennel Club, Irish Setter's Club of America and Retired Teacher's Association. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II. After serving 25 years, he was honorably discharged as a major. He was married on Feb. 20, 1947, in Cherryvale. His wife, Pallie J. Young, died in 2001. Survivors include a son, Gregory B. of Lake Charles, La.; two daughters, Kay L. Young-Williams of Overland Park and Emily A. Baldridge of Wichita; and three grandchildren. The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at University United Methodist Church, Salina. Burial will be in Fort Riley Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Salina or Leukemia Society of America. Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. today at Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. Eighth, Salina 67401, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. |
