Joan Marie Harper

Joan Marie Harper, 80, Salina, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2005.

Mrs. Harper was born Joan Marie Smith on Dec. 5, 1924, in Long Island City, N.Y. She was a cashier at Week’s Grocery, a food service manager at Fort Riley and a central supply clerk at the Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George A. Smith and Mary F. Brick; her husband, Henry F. Harper; two brothers, Vincent “Buddy” Smith and Walter Smith; three sisters, Elizabeth Duff, Helen Carroll and Sister Margaret Smith; a granddaughter, Jennifer; and a great-granddaughter, Carli.

Survivors include three sons, Gary and wife, Becky of Salina, Kevin and wife Jolene of Wichita and Matt of Salina; four daughters, Sharon Bright of Indianapolis, Kathleen Miller and husband Ed of Monmouth, Ill., Mary Ann Haefling and husband J.D. of Rogersville, Mo., and Margie Obenland and husband Dan of Salina; a brother, George A. Smith and wife Nancy of Palm Coast, Fla.; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the Rev. Steve Heina officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

There will be no visitation. The body was cremated.
