Phil was born on June 4, 1935 in Salina, KS, to Richard and Frances Herzig. He spent his childhood in the Smolan, KS area, where his uncles and grandparents helped raise him while working on the family farm. He enjoyed many sports during high school, college, and his time in the Navy, particularly high school varsity baseball & basketball, college varsity basketball, as well as representation on fleet basketball teams.

He was a graduate of Assaria High School in Assaria, KS, received a degree in Biology from Bethany College in Lindsborg, KS, and earned his JD from The University of Kansas School of Law in Lawrence, KS. He was a Naval Aviator stationed in Norfolk, VA, and a reservist stationed in Olathe, KS.

During his professional life as an attorney he practiced in both Burlington, KS and Salina, KS, and the surrounding rural areas. He served as the Lindsborg, KS and Burlington, KS, City Attorney. His charitable interests included the following: Director of Salina Community Theater, Director & President of the Salina Civic Orchestra Society, Chairman of Military Affairs Committee & member of Agriculture & Aviation Committees of the Salina Chamber of Commerce. He was instrumental in founding Salina Youthville. He also served as President of the Burlington Rotary Club.

He enjoyed memberships in: KU Alumni Association, Bethany College "B" Club, Gamma Kappa Phi Social Fraternity, various academic honoraries, Masonic Temple (Salina Lodge No. 60 & Isis Temple Shrine & Scottish Rite), Methodist Church Lay Leadership, Salina Country Club, Salina Elks Club, & coaching various youth sports.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, Gloria Herzig of Prairie Village, KS, son Philip Reed Herzig of University City, MO, daughter Melissa (Scott) Wiles of Prairie Village, KS, sister Nancy (Dave) Anderson of Lindsborg, KS, grandchildren Christian & Bethany Wiles of Prairie Village, KS, nephew Dana (Janice) Anderson of Mulvane, KS, niece Debbie(Warren) Johnson of Lindsborg, KS, niece Dr. Wendy Moore Wolfe of King George, VA, and 5 great nieces & nephews, and 1 great-great niece.

Phil's grandparents, parents, and stepfather preceded him in death. Phil's services are being held at the church of his baptism, confirmation, & marriage. Phil was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Salina, KS.

Funeral services will be held at Salemsborg Lutheran Church, 3831 W. Salemsborg Road in Smolan, KS, 1:00 PM Friday December 1, 2006. Burial will be in the Salemsborg Lutheran Church Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to either Bethany College, Salemsborg Lutheran Church, or Hospice House in care of Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. 8th Street, Salina, KS 67401.

Visitation will take place at Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. 8th Street in Salina, KS, on November 30, 2006, from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm.
