W. Darrel Kelsey
October 23, 1911 - December 2, 2006

W. Darrel Kelsey, 95, of Salina, died Saturday, December 2, 2006. He was born October 23, 1911 near Wells, Kan., the son of Walter C. and Rosa Ruggles Kelsey. Following his childhood in Ottawa County, most of his life was spent in Salina. In 1935, he met Clara Sanders, they were married in 1936, and recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. Darrel was an employee of the U.S. Postal Service in Salina for 31 years, retiring in 1973. A long-time member of Sacred Heart Cathedral parish, he was very active in Council 601 of the Knights of Columbus. He was a former State Warden and member of the Msgr. Maher 4th. Degree Assembly. He has a dance band, the Dee Kay Band, which played in Salina and surrounding communities for many years.

His parents, a brother, three sisters and a grandson preceded him in death. Surviving family include his wife, Clara of the home; son, Darrel A. Kelsey and his wife Marion Ryan Kelsey of Tulsa, OKla.; daughter, Marilyn Sue Bettschen-Kelsey and her husband Rene Bettschen of Reinach, Switzerland; granddaughters Christina S. Kelsey, Seattle, Wash., Teresa A. Kelsey, New York City, Laura Kelsey Marchand and her husband Curtis L. Marchand III of Prairie Village, Kan., Mary Catherine Kelsey Newman and her husband Douglas M. Newman of Kansas City, Mo.; great-grandchildren, Curtis L. Marchand IV, Kelsey A. Marchand and Tyler A. Marchand of Prairie Village, Kan. and Evan M. Newman of Kansas City, Mo.; a brother-in-law, Tony Sanders and his wife, Edna Bush Sanders of Hays, Kan.; a sister-in-law, Ruby Kelsey of Wichita, Kan. and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, December 9, 2006 at the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Salina. Burial will be prior to the Mass at 9:45 a.m. Saturday in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Salina.

A vigil service will be at 7:00 p.m. Friday, December 8, 2006, at Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. Eighth, Salina 67401.

Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday at the mortuary.

The family suggests memorial contributions to the Sacred Heart Cathedral, 118 N. 9th, Salina.
