Mrs. Maxey was born Janice Mae Hanratty on July 20, 1931, in San Francisco. She was a preschool teacher and worked at the senior center. She was a library volunteer, an avid gardener, reader, stargazer and storyteller. She attended San Francisco College of Women.

She married Robert H. Maxey in Fort Eustise, Va.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Robert S. and Sean J.; and a granddaughter, Hannah N. Pilcher.

Survivors include her husband, Robert H., of the home; three sons, Tom and wife Cheryl, Kevin and wife Laura and Patrick; six daughters, Teresa Shane and husband Tim, Tara Maxey, Julia Maxey, Angela Percival and husband Kurt, Susan Cowel and husband Jeff and Kathleen Maxey; a sister, Tomme Jean Hart; 12 grandchildren, Jenna Viscomi, Sara Fry, Colleen Shane, Marissa Yoshida, Tamara Maxey, Skyle J. Maxey, Robert Paul Maxey, Mellisa Maxey, Thomas Pilcher, Maggie Maxey, Jake Cowel and Hunter Tonne; six great-grandchildren, Jake Henry Viscomi, Ryan Viscomi, Katie Fry, Kai Yoshida, Ian Maxey and Killian Pilcher.

A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. Eighth, Salina 67401. Inurnment will be in Fort Riley Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Salina.

There will be no visitation. The body was cremated.
