Lucille E. Galbraith Melton

Manhattan -- Lucille E. Galbraith Melton, 92, Manhattan, died Friday, June 9, 2006.

Mrs. Melton was born Lucille E. Galbraith on May 28, 1914, in Keswick, Iowa. She was a registered nurse and a nursing instructor at Salina Area Vo-Tech for certified nursing assistants, retiring in 1984 after 47 years. She received a teaching recognition award at Salina Area Vo-Tech for teaching 1,062 nursing assistants.

She graduated from Keswick (Iowa) High School in 1931 and from St. Luke’s Hospital Nursing School in Davenport, Iowa, in 1937.

She married Walter C. Melton on Sept. 23, 1946, in Salina.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Presbyterian Women, Retired Teacher’s Association, R.S.V.P. and the Asbury Hospital Auxiliary, all of Salina. She served as captain in the U.S. Army Nursing Corps during World War II. She enjoyed gardening and working at her church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter C., in 1995.

Survivors include two daughters, Christena Walter of West Chester, Ohio, and Elaine Johannes of Manhattan; a brother, Joseph Galbraith Jr. of Keswick; and four grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church, Salina. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park, Salina.

Memorials may be made to the church.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. Eighth, Salina 67401; where the family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m.
