Mr. Schmidt was born July 11, 1935, in Pfeifer. He was a retired farmer and also worked in maintenance at St. John’s Hospital for 15 years, retiring in 1999.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Theresa, in 1959.

Survivors include his wife, Joan, of Salina; three sons, Michael and wife Mary of Ellsworth, David and wife Laura of Assaria and Mark and wife Sandy of Salina; two daughters, Jolene Watson and husband Melvin of Dodge City and Karen Sharp and husband David of Salina; two brothers, Kenneth of Salina and LeRoy of New Cambria; three sisters, Viola Baxter and Patricia Perry, both of Salina, and Sister Lila Schmidt of Concordia; 12 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Salina. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery.

A vigil will be at 7 p.m. today at Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. Eighth, Salina 67401.

Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. today at the mortuary.
