Frances M. Hartley
August 28, 1922 - January 18, 2007

Frances M. Hartley, passed away on January 18, 2007, at her home in Lee’s Summit, Missouri. She was born in Salina, Kansas, on August 28, 1922, the daughter of Fred and Florence Hartley. She is survived by a brother, Harold Hartley, of Manhattan, Kansas, and a nephew, Bruce E. Ratcliff, of Springfield, Missouri, and many friends. She was preceded in death by a brother, F. Joe Hartley, and a sister, Florence Elise Hartley Ratcliff.

Frances attended school in Salina and graduated from Brown’s Business College. She worked as a secretary at Street and Smith Publications in Los Angeles in the 1940’s. She was known for her management skills and her friends described her as unfailingly efficient, gracious, extremely private and adventurous. Later she moved to the New York office and worked at Vogue. She was a gracious hostess who enjoyed entertaining friends who visited there.

She moved to the Kansas City area and worked for several law firms as a legal secretary, where she “broke in” attorneys after they graduated from law school. She did work at the Morris, Larson law firm and Stinson Mag & Fizzell, predecessors of the current firm of Stinson, Morrison, Hecker, LLP. She was staunchly independent and had a no nonsense approach to life. She enjoyed reading, antiques and art. She looked forward to visits from her friends, especially those who would also bring along their pets.

Funeral services will be Monday, January 22, 2007, at 1:00 p.m. at the Ryan Mortuary in Salina, Kansas. Memorial contributions may be made to Friends of the Kansas City Public Library.
