Elizabeth Jane Johnson, 87, Salina, died Saturday, Oct. 13, 2007. Mrs. Johnson was born E. Jane Sowell on May 12, 1920, in Salina to Nelson and Ora Hays Sowell. She worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone.She was the oldest living member of St. John’s Missionary Baptist Church. She walked with her grandparents at the age of 5 from the original church to the dedication of the first new church at 339 North Ninth, and walked to the dedication of the present church at 215 South Chicago for its dedication after the burning of the old church. She was a member of the church Choir, the Christian Women’s Association and Southwestern Bell Pioneers Club. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert; two brothers, John and Charles; and a foster brother, Jesse Evans. Survivors include two daughters, Gloria Bogans of Houston and Barbara Hutcherson of Lee’s Summit, Mo.; a son, Robert “Stormy” of Houston; two sisters, Frances Young and Byrdie Kelly, both of Salina; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. John’s Missionary Baptist Church in Salina. Burial will be in Gypsum Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the church. Visitation will be at the church prior to the service. |
