Mrs. Oakes was born Marcella Dowling on Nov. 10, 1921, in Salina to Charles and Anna Schmedemann Dowling. She was a retired bookkeeper for Ballou Construction and a freelance artist with over 900 works sold throughout the United States.

She attended the Art Institute of Chicago, where she lived for 30 years. She married William Robert Oakes in Salina on June 18, 1946.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Robert Oakes, on June 9, 1969.

Survivors include three sons, Dennis and wife Martha of Salina, Douglas and wife Marilyn of Buda, Texas, and Gilbert of Austin, Texas; and a sister, Ann Eitel and husband Walter of Salina.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Cathedral, Salina, the Rev. Alan Scheer officiating. Burial will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Chapman.

Visitation will be from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday at Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. Eighth, Salina 67401, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m.
