Herman Adolph Steimel, 87, Salina, died Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2007. Mr. Steimel was born Aug. 27, 1920, in Spearville to Adolph and Anna Durler Steimel. He co-owned S & H Lumber Co. of Claflin, retiring in 1984. He previously worked for Colorado Flour Mills. He married Waneta Vogel on Jan. 15, 1946, in Wright. He was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, Salina, a lifetime member of Knights of Columbus, lifetime and past commander of the VFW, Claflin, parish council member of Immaculate Conception Church, Claflin, and former member of the Claflin housing board. He served in the U.S. Army in the China-Burma-India Theater during World War II. He loved gardening, sports, card playing and family gatherings. He was preceded in death by a son, Glenn, in 1999; and a daughter-in-law, Maridell Steimel, in 1996. Survivors include his wife, Waneta A., of the home; two sons, Robert and wife Lorene of Concordia and Lyle and wife Barbara of Cincinnati; three daughters, Carol Ahlvers and husband David and Rose Steimel, all of Salina, and Sharon Steimel and husband Steve Thomas of Hays; two brothers, Alfred of Wright and Raymond of Washington, D.C.; two sisters, Teresa Barragree of Dodge City and Bertha Woodward of Wichita; 14 grandchildren, Rodella Strait and husband Jay, Pam Weiderholt and husband Scott, Deborah Clair and husband Joe, Charles Steimel and wife Sarah, Carrie Beth Steimel, Leslie Amick and husband Andrew, Nolan Ahlvers, Jessica Smith, Adam Steimel, Kimberly Steimel, Daniel Steimel, Kelly Giebler and husband Trevor, Eric Thomas and Drew Thomas; and 12 great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, Salina, Father Frank Coady officiating. Burial with military rites by Fort Riley will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Salina. A rosary will be said at a vigil at 7 p.m. Friday at the church. Memorials may be made to the church. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday at Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. Eighth, Salina 67401, and from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the church. |
