Margeurite “Marjorie” Marie (Wade) Allen, passed away Friday, Oct. 24, 2008, in Salina. She was born March 5, 1921, in Florence, and was the eldest daughter of Ernest and Ida Carmichel Wade. Mrs. Allen was a graduate of Wichita High School East and attended the Business Preparatory College. On Aug. 10, 1941, she married Roy W. Allen in Wichita. She was active there as a homemaker, an employee of the Federal Intermediate Credit Bank, a Dale Carnegie instructor and a community volunteer. She also was a past President of the Women’s Aeronautical Society. In 1971, Mrs. Allen moved to Salina with her husband. She served on the Board of Directors of the Salina Community Theater and the St. John’s Hospital Auxiliary. She also was a member of the Salina Regional Health Center Auxiliary, PEO, Downtown Lioness Club and the Republican Party. And she was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where her favorite job was serving in the Tender Loving Care Program. Mrs. Allen’s favorite hobby was playing bridge at the behest of a close friend, and her lifelong passion was dancing with her husband. She was active in her support for the cause of battered wives; and for civic events such as the reception she hosted at her home for Ronald Reagan shortly before he announced his bid for the presidency. Mrs. Allen was preceded in death by her husband, Roy, in 2007. Survivors include a son, Roy, of Los Angeles; daughter, Dr. Barbara Allen Hill, of Bryn Mawr, Pa.; sister, Mrs. Betty Jean Mattingly and husband LeRoy, of Wichita; brother, Ernest Wade and wife Betty Ann, of Peck; sister-in-law, Mrs. Mildred Hemme, of Sweet Springs, Mo.; three grandchildren, Nicola and Ryder Hill, and Megan Williams; nieces and nephews including: Pamela Burke, Maxine Williams and Richard Pennycuff; grandnephew, Robert Burke Jr.; and her special cousin, Mrs. Jean Marie Gabel, of Billings, Mont. Her grandmother, Mrs. Mary Ann Hall Wade, counted many colorful characters of the early American West in her extended family, including Cole Younger and the Halls of Quantrill’s Raiders. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. Eighth St., Salina 67401. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 31, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Ninth and Crawford, Salina 67401, with Reverends Robert Schaedel and Charles Adams officiating. A graveside service and interment will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31, at White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Wichita. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the church or Presbyterian Manor, Salina. |
