Maceo “Mace” Braxton Jr. MD, age 54, died February 15, 2008 at the Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, TX after a short illness. Dr. Braxton was born April 7, 1953 at Los Angeles, CA to Maceo Braxton Sr. and Bernice M. (Tuggle) Braxton. Dr. Braxton attended West Point and graduated in 1974. He then attended the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences Medical School, was a member of the Charter Class, and graduated in 1980. He served in the United States Military until 1998, and retired as a Lt. Colonel. Dr. Braxton served Salina as a Cardio-Thoracic Surgeon, and in 1998 started the Heart Surgery Program, at the Salina Regional Health Center, and headed the program until his death. He was a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, served on the Board of Directors of Kansas Wesleyan University, Salina Chamber of Commerce and St. John’s Military School. He was a member of the National Medical Association, the Kansas Medical Society and the American College of Surgeons. He was a member of the Gridiron Club, the Masonic Lodge #60, the St. Johns Lutheran Church, the NAACP, and a former member of the YMCA Board of Directors all of Salina. He is survived by his wife Shirley of the home. One Daughter, Natalie Braxton of New York, NY. Two Sons, Maceo Braxton III of Worcester, MA and Andrew Braxton of Salina. His Mother, Bernice Braxton of Salina. One Brother, John and Wife Debbie Braxton of Cape Elizabeth, ME. Three Sisters, Denise Anduze of Hollywood, CA; Sylvia Braxton of Washington, DC and Pamela Davis and Husband Dr. Trent Davis of Salina. Funeral Services will be 10:00 am Saturday at the Sacred Heart Cathedral, 9th and Iron Ave, Salina, with Rev. Ed Foster officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA. Visitation will be Friday 10:00 am to 3:00 pm at the Ryan Mortuary 137 North Eighth St. Salina, and from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the St. Johns Lutheran Church 302 S. 7th St. Salina. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Mace Braxton Memorial Fund to benefit Education and the Salina Regional Health Center. |
