Staff Sgt. Tony Lee Chiles, 45, Salina, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2008. Mr. Chiles was born Oct. 5, 1963, in Frankfurt, Germany, to Dean L. and Sonja M. Chiles, of Salina. Survivors include his wife, Jacquelyn; daughter, Jayme, of the home; sister, Janet Chiles and family, of Wichita; brother, Robert and family, of Salina; half brother, Peter Bosin, of Frankfurt; in-laws, Clarence and Hilda Schneider, of Salina; and seven brothers-in-law, Jake Schneider and family, of Salina, Johnny Schneider and family, of Salina, Jerry Schneider and family, of Brookville, Jesse Schneider and family, of Hutchinson, Jason Schneider and family, of Salina, Jeremy Schneider and family, of Salina, and Jerome Schneider and family, of Salina. Mr. Chiles was employed by Exide Battery of Salina and was a member of the Kansas Army National Guard, where he served with the 2nd Battalion 130th Field Artillery. Tony’s passions in life were his family, friends and his country. He joined the Army in 1983 and was stationed at Fort Wainwright, Alaska, where he served with the 172nd Airborne Division for three years. After his discharge in 1986, Tony joined the Army Reserve and then the Kansas Army National Guard, where he has served his country since. Staff Sgt. Chiles served two tours in Iraq. He was first assigned in 2003 as a convoy security chief for the Multinational Forces Iraq Joint Visitors Bureau during Operation Iraqi Freedom II in Baghdad. In 2006, he served with the 714th SECFOR out of Mosul, Iraq, as a convoy security escort. In 2006, Staff Sgt. Chiles was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries received in a mortar attack on his position while stationed in Mosul. Tony was an avid motorcyclist and spent time riding with the Patriot Guard honoring fallen veterans and doing anything he could to help his military family and friends. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2, at St. John’s Military School Chapel, with Father James R. Cox officiating. Burial will be in Gypsum Hill Cemetery, Salina, followed by a celebration of life at the VFW Post in Salina. The family requests donations be made to Hospice of Salina, Purple Heart Chapter, and OCCK, all of Salina, in care of his daughter, Jayme Chiles. |
