Vernon R. Englund
September 20, 1928 - August 23, 2008

Vernon R. Englund, 79, passed away Saturday, August 23, 2008. Vernon was born September 20, 1928 in Smolan, Kansas to Roy and Hilda Englund. After high school he served in the U.S. Marine Corps until 1948. He returned to Smolan where he married and raised a family while farming the family homestead until 1967. He then moved his family to Lindsborg where he worked as a carpenter and homebuilder. He worked for the Cloyd Dent Construction company for many years and then went on to build many houses in the Lindsborg area on his own. While in Lindsborg he was very active with the local American Legion Post #0140 and had received his 60 year certificate. He was a member of the Lindsborg Police Department, member of the Reserve Police, and member of the Kansas Peace Officers Association.

In 1986, Vernon retired to Mesa, Arizona where he resided until recently. Due to failing health, he returned to Lindsborg to be closer to his daughters. He was preceded in death by his parents and infant son, Richard Vernon (Dickie). He is survived by his wife Ada Kopf-Englund of Mesa; daughters Karen Liljestrand and husband Syd of Lindsborg; Cathy Englund of Overland Park; sister Jean Persigehl and husband Marvin of Salina; niece Donna Persigehl of Atlanta, Georgia and nephew David Persigehl of Smolan.

Graveside memorial services will be at Roselawn Memorial Cemetery. The family would encourage those who wish to remember Vernon to make memorials to the Lindsborg American Legion’s Avenue of Flags or the charity of their choice.
