Col. Leon Eugene Everhart
January 14, 1928 - June 21, 2008

SANTA MARIA, Calif. — Col. Leon Eugene Everhart, 80, Santa Maria, CA, formerly of Gypsum, KS, died Saturday, June 21, 2008, in Santa Maria, CA. He was born on Jan. 14, 1928, in Abilene. He was a graduate of Gypsum High School, attended Kansas State College and received a B.S. with distinction in aerospace engineering from Arizona State College in 1957. He also did post graduate work at the University of Tennessee. He served as an operations officer at the Berlin Air Safety Center; project officer at the Missile Development Center at Holloman Air Force Base; chief of special projects division of the Missile Development Center; and tactical fighter pilot and flight commander in South Vietnam. He was a system program director for the Aerospace Systems Division at Wright Patterson Air Force Base, director of test engineering at the Development and Test Center at Elgin Air Force Base and commander of the Air Force Western Test Range at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. He was a retired colonel with the U.S. Air Force after serving in Korea, Turkey, Italy, Germany and Vietnam. He was a member of the Gypsum United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his sister-in-law, Fern Everhart of Lindsborg; and three nieces, Janis Everhart of Dallas, Tara Michilli of Littleton, CO, and Sharon Moeller of Las Vegas.

Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. Monday at Gypsum United Methodist Church, 524 King, Gypsum, KS 67448.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, June 30, 2008, at the church, with Pastor Dan Curnutt officiating. Burial will be in Gypsum Cemetery, Gypsum, Kansas. Military honors will be provided by McConnell Air Force Base.
