Mardonna S. “Mardy” Hedges

OVERLAND PARK — Mardonna S. “Mardy” Hedges, 67, of Overland Park, KS, formerly of Salina, KS, died peacefully March 9, 2008. Mardy grew up in Wichita, KS, daughter of Homer “Don” and Margaret Duncan. She graduated from Wichita East HS and attended Wichita University and Baker University, graduating with a degree in education. She later received an MA in gifted/special education from Pittsburg State University. She was a caring and talented educator, who enriched the lives of countless students throughout her teaching career. She was honored in 2002 by Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers. Mardy married her college sweetheart, Tom Hedges, in 1963, and they lived their married lives in Rossville, Ellinwood, Kingman, Pittsburg, Salina and Overland Park, KS. Mardy was a creative spirit who shared her talents of music, art, poetry and drama with everyone she knew, particularly those in her church community. Mardy was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband, Tom, of the home; daughters, Laura Gay, Prairie Village, KS, Beth Altergott and husband Doug, Wichita, KS; grandchildren, Sam Gay, Ethan and Carley Altergott, Anu Santala and husband Reima, Helsinki, Finland; and brother, Dave Duncan and wife Casey of Wichita, KS. The memories of her kind spirit and gentle heart surround those she leaves behind, including an extended family of in-laws, nieces, nephews and dear friends. A celebration of Mardy’s life will be held Saturday, March 29, 2008, at 1:30 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, Salina, KS. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Trinity United Methodist Church, 901 E. Neal, Salina, KS 67401; Grace United Methodist Church, 11485 S.
