Gene Franklin Hinde, 80, of Salina, died April 21, 2008 at the Kaye Pogue Hospice Center. He was born November 9, 1927 in Parsons, to Robert R. & Marie M. (Groff) Hinde. He graduated in 1945 from Salina High School. He attended Kansas Wesleyan University, the University of Nebraska, and the Chicago Art Institute. During his architectural drafting and design career, he worked for Charles W. and John A. Shaver Architects, Gene F. Hinde and Associates, Wilson and Company Architects and Engineers, and the Shaver Partnership. Gene retired in 1992 and dedicated his retirement years to designing veteran war memorials. The Veterans Memorial in Salina's Sunset Park, the B-29 Veterans Memorial in Great Bend, and the State of Kansas Korean War Memorial in Wichita, were his last design achievements. Gene was an avid sportsman and athlete. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and boating. His athletic endeavors included American Legion baseball, Collegiate baseball at the University of Nebraska, and becoming a Golden Gloves welterweight boxing champion. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy, July 1945 and was assigned to the 61st. Naval Construction Battalion at Samar, Philippines. He was lifetime member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Marine Corps League and the Pehrson Lake Club.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Robert & Marie Hinde; 1st wife, Ruth A. (Owens) Hinde, 1997; 2nd wife, Kay Aleida (Veverka) Hinde, 1975; a daughter, Debra Marie Grasher, 2007; and a brother, Robert R. Hinde, 2000.
Survivors include five daughters, Sandra Wallace, Vicki Wilson & husband Jeff, Lori Hall & husband Kelly, Melissa Nowak, and Rachel Hinde, all of Salina; one son, Lance Hinde, Salina; Rachel's mother, Pamela Barker, Salina; special friend, Doris Conger, Salina; two brothers, William & wife Delores of Hot Springs, AR, and John of Phoenix, AZ; fourteen grandchildren, Shane Wallace & wife Sarah, Robin Lillegard & husband Gary, Ryan Wallace & wife Amira, Parker Wallace & wife Jennifer, Lauren Crick & husband Aaron, Courtney Turpin & husband Kenny, Ashley Wilson, Jacob Wilson, Betsy Wilson, Savannah Hall, Wyatt Hall, Joel Ginther and Jessica Blackwell, Lynsey Webb & husband Joe, Hunter Nowak, and Olivia Mancino-Hinde; fourteen great grandchildren, Morgan, Madison, Trevor, Ryleigh, Jacob, Kyle, Kaden, Kyan, Kendall, Cooper, Emme, Payton, Brookelyn, and Sophia.
Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Monday, April 28, 2008, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Salina. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park, Salina. Visitation will be from Noon to 8:00 PM Sunday at the Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. 8th. St., Salina. The family will greet visitors from 4:00 to 6:00 PM Sunday. Memorial contributions may be given to the Kaye Pogue Hospice Center.
