Wilbur Miller Hogg Jr.
September 1, 1930 - October 6, 2008

Wilbur Miller Hogg Jr. died Oct. 6 at Salina Regional Medial Center in Salina. Born Sept. 1, 1930 near Minneapolis the son of Wilbur Miller Sr. and Leona (Shur) Hogg, he married Mary Frances Shepek in 1959 at Kansas Wesleyan Chapel in Salina.

Ellinwood was Hogg's adopted home for many years where he became active in promoting learning and the arts. Many residents may remember him as one of the early morning coffee bunch. Due to health issues, he and Mary Frances moved to Salina in 1999. He was a retired high school teacher having spent 35 years teaching Spanish, speech, debate and drama at Ellinwood High School, passing his life-long love of learning on to countless young minds. He was a graduate of Minneapolis High School in 1948, and earned a bachelor's degree from Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina in 1952, and a master's and specialist's degrees from Emporia State University. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict and a long-time member of the American Legion Post 320 in Ellinwood, yet was a lover of peace. He had been a member of the Methodist churches in Minneapolis and Ellinwood where he often sang, sharing another of his passions - music, everything from Bach to the Beatles. Hogg was also a long-time member of the Ellinwood Rotary Club, the National Rifle Association, Kansas National Educators Association, Kansas Public Radio, Amnesty International and other socially conscious organizations.

His teaching extended beyond the walls of EHS. As a father, he made sure his sons understood the meaning of work, learning and being well rounded citizens of the world. After retiring, he and his wife continued their quest for expanded horizons by traveling and enjoying life.

Survivors include: His wife Mary Frances of the home; two sons, Dale and wife Linda, and Jonathan, all of Great Bend; one sister, Linda and husband Roger of Opie; two brothers, Donald and wife Loretta of Wichita, and Rodney and wife Evlyn of Scott City; three grandchildren, Carrie Hogg, Ian Hogg and Stuart Hogg, all of Great Bend;one cousin, Janice Mathews and husband Dennis of Salina; and one brother-in-law Ruben Dale Shepek of Virginia. He was preceded in death by his parents and one infant brother.

Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Salina with the Rev. Bob Smith of the Minneapolis First United Methodist Church officiating. Memorials are suggested to the American Legion, Kansas Wesleyan University, the Salvation Army or the American Red Cross, all in care of Ryan Mortuary in Salina.
