Vernon D. Hopper
October 15, 1927 - November 9, 2008

NILES — Vernon D. Hopper, 81, Niles, died peacefully at his home with loving family on Sunday, Nov. 9, 2008. He was born Oct. 15, 1927, in Holladay, Tenn., the son of Roy and Eula Carpenter Hopper. Eula passed on when Vernon was 6 and he was raised by his grandmother, Sally Carpenter.

Vernon enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1946 and was very proud to be a World War II veteran. After an honorable discharge, he went to tool and die trade school and became a machinist. He went to work for General Motors Co. in 1955 and worked for 33 years at the Fisher Body plant in Willow Spring, Ill.

He remains a member of U.A.W. Local 558. He loved to travel, hunt and fish and that is what his grandchildren will remember most about their “Paw Paw.” Vernon was one of eight brothers and two sisters.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandmother, Sally Carpenter; wife, Miraim Hopper; and daughter, Sandra Turner. He is survived by a son, Hershel and wife Connie, of Niles; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Vernon’s remains will be cremated and taken to his beloved home of Camden, Tenn. Condolences may be sent to the family at 2504 Arrowhead Road, Niles 67480. Ryan Mortuary, Salina, is in charge of arrangements.
