Laurence E. Jilka
October 14, 1922 - September 7, 2008

LAWRENCE — Laurence E. Jilka, age 85, died Sept. 7, 2008, at the Brandonwoods Retirement Center, Lawrence. He was born Oct. 14, 1922, in Wilson. He was in business with his brother Bernard Jilka, owning Jilka Furniture in Salina for many years. He then was the assistant manager for Elmore Center in Salina until his retirement.

He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the U.S. Army 69th Division in Germany. He was a member of the Salina Elks and the Knights of Columbus.

He was preceded in death by one grandson, Ryan Jilka in 1984.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred, of the home; three sons, Robert Jilka and wife Judy of Little Rock, AR, Edward of Silverton, CO, and David Jilka and wife Patricia of Lawrence; two daughters, Mary Louise Jilka and husband Wesley Nakajima of Lexington, KY, and Monica Gutierrez and husband Steve of Lawrence; a brother, Bernard of Salina; a sister, Marilyn Dobratz of Topeka; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

The funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the St. Mary Queen of the Universe Catholic Church, 230 E. Cloud St., Salina, with Father Kerry Ninemire officiating. Burial will be in the Mount Calvary Cemetery, Salina. A vigil/rosary service will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. Eighth St., Salina.
