He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a military police officer during the Japanese war crime trials in Tokyo. He married Lorretta Roesner on May 8, 1954, in Salina. They lived and farmed near Salina and Beloit and moved to Colorado in 1967.

His daughters remember him for his love of the land, his many woodworking projects, his love of farm auctions and antiques, his fresh baked bread and cinnamon rolls, his appreciation for long solitary drives in the country, the homemade sleds, rides in the tractor bucket, and playing card and board games.

His daughters wish to extend their heartfelt gratitude to his son-in-law, Bob, for his tireless and faithful friendship to their dad for many years.

On behalf of their father, thank you, Bob, for being the son that he never had.

Bernard was preceded in death by his wife in 1974; his parents; five brothers, Joseph, James, Raymond, Ralph and John; and two sisters, Kathryn Peterson and Mary Frances Calteaux.

Survivors include his seven daughters, Donna George and husband Mike of Blair, NE, Martha Ball and husband Bob of Guernsey, WY, Ellen Ridolfi of Blair, NE, Mary Schubert and husband Rick of Blair, NE, Katherine Gorman and husband Bill of Wheatland, WY, Carole Meier of Sterling, CO, and Janet Martin and friend Ron of Loveland, CO; a brother, Kenneth Martin of Solomon; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family will greet visitors from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. Eighth, Salina, KS 67401.

Vigil will be at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the mortuary.Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 22, 2008, at the mortuary. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Salina.
