Robert Frederick Miller
December 19, 1917 - August 14, 2008

Robert Frederick Miller, 90, Salina, retired grain man and entrepreneur, born in Kansas City, MO, on Dec. 19, 1917, died Thursday, Aug. 14, 2008, in Salina.

Bob grew up in Kansas City during the Depression and served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. Bob moved to Salina in the early 1950’s and founded the Miller Grain Company there.

He married Margaret Sofia Hees on Dec. 12, 1942.

The story of Bob’s life is one of triumph over adversity. His difficult childhood during the Depression fostered his determination to improve his lot and provide for his family. His impressive successes in business enabled him to provide a college education for his children and grandchildren, and to sponsor two families from Germany. He loved to visit his farm and cattle with his longtime friend Henry Diehl on his properties near Salina. He was an avid traveler; his favorite destinations were Switzerland, Australia and England. In more recent years, Bob engaged in researching his family’s history and genealogy.

Bob’s friends and family will always remember and admire his strength, energy, intelligence, wit and work ethic.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret.

Bob is survived by his son, Mark of Key West, FL; two daughters, Susan LeVine of Wichita and Anne Miller of Eugene, OR; six grandchildren, Eva, Susannah and Alexandra LeVine, Melissa Andrews, Mayim Stiller, and Sarah Miller; and three great-grandchildren, Payton and Lindsey Schmidt, and Tyler Henry.

The family extends its most heartfelt thanks and gratitude to Tamara Britton, Gene Innes, Jan Wheeler, Pat Olsen, Jane Carr, Andy White and Sarra Reeves for their extraordinary and compassionate care of Bob during his last years.

Service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Christ Cathedral, Salina. Graveside service for immediate family only, please. Visitation will from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Ryan’s.
