Herbert E. Monroe, 81, Salina, died Tuesday, April 1, 2008. He was born in Diamond Springs, KS, on Oct. 8, 1926, to Don and Ruth Phillips Monroe. He married Ima Jean Prather on Nov 17, 1945, at the Council Grove Baptist Church. Herb worked for Wilson Engineers for 15 years and as a superintendent for Brown & Brown Construction for over 23 years. He owned Landmark Surveying and Mapping for eight years and was co-owner of Vita Villa Health Foods. He was a “Big Brother” in Big Brothers Big Sisters and coached hundreds of children over 43 years in kid’s basketball for the YMCA and “church leagues.” He was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and a 50 year Mason. He was a member of Church of the Cross United Methodist, where he had served on the endowment committee and served as church treasurer and coordinator of communion, ushers and “Helping Hands.” He is preceded in death by a daughter, Cathy Johnson, 1997; three brothers, Don, Jim and Leo; and a sister, Bernadine Caley. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Jean, of the home; his son, Charles and spouse, Penny Monroe, Salina; and his three sisters, Ina Atchinson, Campbell, CA, Ruth Goodwin, Gardner, KS, and Linda Smith, Florida. He has one granddaughter, Amy Ankrum; three grandsons, Josh Wineland, Chauncey Kuhl and Kelly Kuhl; one great-granddaughter, Sawyer Wineland; and his adopted family, Roxanne, Carley and Kelly Tolle, Salina. Funeral services will be Friday at 10 a.m. at the Church of the Cross United Methodist Church, Salina, KS. Burial will be in the Gypsum Hill Cemetery, Salina. Friends may call on Thursday from noon until 8 p.m. at the Ryan Mortuary, where the family will receive friends from 5 until 6 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the church. |
