Devine Arthur “D.A.” Norris
April 8, 1906 - June 4, 2008

Devine Arthur “D.A.” Norris, 102, died Wednesday, June 4, 2008. He was born on April 8, 1906, in Chester, Ill., to Cora Devine and Arthur Norris. D.A., also known as “Dee,” lived in Salina for much of his life. He attended and graduated from Lincoln High School, Salina. Dee attended Kansas Wesleyan University and graduated in 1929. He lived in Topeka and Hutchinson before moving back to Salina in 1939. In 1947, he founded Norris Furniture, which was then located at 131 and 133 South Santa Fe, Salina. In January 1957, Dee moved the store to 1930 S. Ninth St., Salina, KS 67401, where it stands today. He owned and was actively involved in the store’s management for more than 50 years before retiring in 2006.

Dee was an avid hunter and fisherman, and a long time member of the Pherson (Grainman’s) Lake Hunting Club. He loved golf and got his first hole-in-one at age 92. In 2007, he shot his age at 101. He served on the board of directors of First National Bank, Salina, for several years. He loved to travel, and he loved his church family at Christ Cathedral, Salina.

On Sept. 3, 1934, Dee married Edna Lee Gutsch, in Salina. She passed away in April, 1989. On April 25, 1991, Dee married Ruth Ramsey, in Sun City, Ariz. She passed away in April, 2002. Dee also was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Iolyene.

Survivors include his son, Ned Norris and wife Linda, Santa Fe, N.M.; granddaughters, Cynthia Norris, Albuquerque, N.M., Amanda Gould and husband Mick, Las Cruces, N.M., and Angela Pritchett and husband Michael, Overland Park; grandson, Dr. Kevin Norris and wife Veronica; and great-grandchildren, Rachel, Erik, Emma and Brett Norris, all of Salina, and Grace Pritchett, Overland Park.

A memorial Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 7, at Christ Cathedral Episcopal Church, Salina. Burial will be private. Friends may call to view and sign a register at Ryan Mortuary, Salina, today from noon to 8 p.m.

Memorials may be made to St. John’s Military School, the church or Hospice of Salina, all of Salina, in care of the funeral home.
