| September 26, 1910 - May 7, 2008 |
OLATHE — Luella Pierce, 97, Olathe, formerly of Salina, passed away Wednesday, May 7, 2008, at Homestead South. Luella was born on September 26, 1910, on the family farm outside Falun, Kansas. Her parents, Gustave and Ellen Sunblom, were second generation Swedish immigrants. Her early years were spent doing her share of chores on the homestead. She had vivid memories of being raised on a farm in early 20th century, experiencing two World Wars, surviving the Kansas “dust bowl” and witnessing, on TV, the first man on the moon. Luella graduated from Falun High School and Brown Mackie School of Business. In 1934, she began working for the Coca-Cola bottling plant in Salina. In 1947, she married Roy Pierce, who was the manager of the Coca-Cola facility. Roy often fondly said he “managed the place but Luella actually ran it.” Roy passed away in 1969. Luella continued to work for Coca-cola until 1978, retiring as office manager. She was a member of both the regional and national chapters of the American Business Women’s Association, as well as St. John’s Lutheran Church and group, Tabitha. In 1978, she was awarded the honor of “Woman of the Year” for the ABWA Salina chapter. In addition to her husband, Roy, she was preceded in death by a brother, Virgil Sundblom; and three sisters, Thelma Fredlake, Dorothy Hall and Virginia Farmer. Survivors include her stepson, Roy Pierce Jr. of Oklahoma; and numerous nieces and nephews, including Stuart Sundblom and wife Debra of Olathe. A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Monday in Gypsum Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church, Salina. Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday at Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. Eighth, Salina 67401. |
