Joseph Sanchez Sr.
April 27, 1919 - October 12, 2008

Joseph Sanchez Sr., 89, of Salina, died Sunday, Oct. 12, 2008. He was born the son of Antonio and Maria (Alva) Sanchez, on April 27, 1919, in Salina. He worked as a section foreman for the Union Pacific Railroad for 33 years and retired in 1974. He was married to Marjorie L. Martin on Sept. 13, 1939, in Abilene. Joseph served in the U.S. Army during W.W. II in the Pacific Theater. He was a member of Our Lady Of Guadalupe and St. Mary’s Catholic Churches, and was a life member of V.F.W. Post 1432. He loved woodworking and enjoyed his part-time work at Dillons, visiting with all the customers.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, one sister, three granddaughters and one grandson.Survivors include his wife, Marjorie, of Salina; six sons, Joseph Jr. and wife Maggie, of Salina, Steven and wife Addie, of Hutchinson, Ernie and wife Judy, of Salina, Raymond and wife Colleen, of Moreno Valley, CA, Tom, of Topeka, and David and wife Kristie, of Lee’s Summit, MO; two daughters, Maria Hernandez, of Salina, and Denise Miller and husband Todd, of Solomon; 30 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 17, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Salina. The vigil will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. Eighth, Salina 67401. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Salina. Memorial contributions may be given to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or St. Mary’s Grade School. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Ryan Mortuary.
