Mr. Urbanek was born July 16, 1921 in Ellsworth County. He was the owner of Al’s Food Market, Salina and Family Foods, Ellsworth, Ks. He was a custodian for 16 years for Ellsworth School District #327. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, all of Ellsworth.

He was preceded in death by his spouse, Irene E. Kepka Urbanek, 1999, and his parents, Carl J. Urbanek & the former Stella Frances “Anna” Krizek, a grandson, Lawrence Arpin, a brother, Jack Urbanek, and a two sisters, Belva Dolezal & Shirley Dismukes.

Survivors include a son, Carl J. and spouse, Debi, Urbanek, Manhattan; six daughters, Judith & spouse, Jerry, Arpin, Salina, Dalene & spouse, Larry, Hall, Smolan, Peggy & spouse, Anthony, Gassmann, Oberlin, Sheri & spouse, Doug, Meyer, Wichita, Lori & spouse, Byron, Hanson, Loveland, Colorado, Tammi & spouse, Tim, Bahr, Tallahassee, Florida; a brother, Cliff Urbanek, Salina; two sisters, Blanche Woodmansee, Wilson and Arlene VanValey, Gig Harbor, Washington; 17 granchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

A memorial mass will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, Ellsworth, with Rev. Daniel Scheetz officiating.
