Lydia Alvarez, age 82, of Salina, died Monday, March 23, 2009, at Salina Regional Health Center, Salina. Mrs. Alvarez was born Lydia Serrano on Aug. 7, 1926, in Barceleoneta, PR. She was a retired seamstress. She moved to New York in the 1940s, where she met and married her husband, Juan Ramon Alvarez, in 1955. She moved to Salina to be near her daughter in 2006 from Hialeah, Fla. Her family and taking care of her home in Florida were most important to Lydia. She loved to cook and had a great love for animals. She is preceded in death by her husband, Juan, in 1991. She is survived by a son, Raymond, of Miami, FL; a daughter Carmen Carney and husband Michael, of Salina; and two grandchildren. The Mass of Christian burial will be 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary Queen of the Universe Catholic Church, 230 East Cloud St., Salina, with Father Allen Scheer officiating. Cremation will follow the Mass. Visitation will be 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Ryan Mortuary, 137 North Eighth, Salina. A vigil/rosary service will be 7 p.m. today at the Mortuary. Memorials are suggested to the American Kidney Foundation. |
