Helen Lucille Ashton, 90, died Sunday, April 12, 2009. She was born Feb. 24, 1919, in Salina to Daniel and Sylvia Struble. She and her husband, Leon, owned and operated Ashton’s Supermarket with Merle and Marguerite Ashton for 40 years. Helen served as a precinct committee woman for many years, volunteered at Asbury Hospital snack bar and gift shop, and was a Meals-on-Wheels volunteer and a member of First United Methodist Church, Salina. Her hobbies included gardening, travel and playing bridge. Helen was preceeded in death by a brother, Daniel "Bus" Struble, and great-grandson, Elijah Eckman. Survivors include her husband of 67 years, Leon, of the home; daughter, Diana and husband Howard, of Estero, Fla.; son, Steve and wife Karin, of Salina; brother, Donald Struble, of Salina; grandchildren, Leslie (Aaron) Daily, of Peachtree City, Ga., Ashley (Brian) Eckman, of Rochester, N.Y., Bradley (Mackenzie) Warren, of Oak Harbor, Ohio, and Wesley (Elizabeth) Ashton and Emily (Douglas) Halsey, all of Overland Park; and great-grandchildren, Colleen and Jacob Daily, William and Samuel Eckman, and Violet and Adaline Warren. Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. today at Ryan Mortuary, Salina, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 15, at First United Methodist Church, 122 N. Eighth, Salina, with the Rev. Troy Bowers officiating. Burial will be in Gypsum Hill Cemetery, Salina. Memorials may be given to Salina Regional Health Center or the church. |
