Dr. Joseph W. Figg
July 6, 1930 - February 10, 2009

Dr. Joseph W. Figg, 78, of Salina, died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2009. He was born July 6, 1930, in Oklahoma City, Okla., the son of Joe Wilson and Emily Pearl Ferguson Figg. Dr. Figg was a career music educator focused on choral music. He was director of choral music at Kansas Wesleyan University at the time of his retirement in 1995.

He taught high school choral music in Oklahoma City public schools, Richardson, Texas, and Baton Rouge, La. He received his doctoral degree in 1980 from North Texas State University. He was a choral director and professor of music at Morehead State, L.S.U. and Juniata Huntington College.

Throughout his career, Dr. Figg continued a career as a professional performer, private vocal instructor, and community and church choral director, including the Salina Chorale and the choir of the First United Methodist Church.

He married Norah C. Ryan on April 16, 1950 at the First United Methodist Church, Guthrie, OK. Norah survives him as do his four sons and a daughter: Michael Joe and spouse, Linda, Figg, Austin, TX; David Wesley and spouse, Elizabeth, Figg, Dallas, TX, Phillip Ryan & spouse, Cindy, Figg, Dallas, TX; Catherine Figg Gaston, Baton Rouge, LA. and Lawrence Clark Figg, Overland Park, KS. Dr. Figg has a sister, Jeanne Wright, Martinez, CA; 20 grand children, Ryan Figg, Noah Figg, Simon Figg, Elliot Figg, Emily Figg, Audra Figg, Evan Figg, Andrea Carver, Jonathan Figg, Brandon Figg, Mary Gaston, Peter Gaston, Jesse Gaston, Bonnie Gaston, Twila Gaston, Kevin Figg, Brian Figg, Windy Roundtree, Teri Elliott, Avgouste Antonov; and 10 great grandchildren, Austin Figg, Jeana Lee Keeling, Jacob Carver, Joshua Carver, Jackson Carver, Saxon Williams, Hannah Willams, Serena Elliott, Amanda Roundtree, Jessica Williams and two dogs, Franz & Igor.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 Saturday morning, Feb. 14, at First United Methodist Church, Salina, with the Rev. Troy Bowers officiating. Burial will be in Gypsum Hill Cemetery, Salina.

Visitation will be from noon until 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13, at Ryan Mortuary, where the family will receive friends from 7 until 8 p.m.
