WHITEWATER, Wis. — Lois Maxine Larson, 90, formerly of Smolan, Kan., a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt, passed away peacefully on Feb. 6, 2009, at Fairhaven Retirement Community, Whitewater. She was born Aug. 12, 1918, in Salina, Kan., to Corey William and Grace Marie (Howe) Fear and spent much of her youth in Cottonwood Falls, Kan., and Bennington, Kan. She was salutatorian of Smolan High School and attended Brown-Mackie School of Business. As a young woman, she worked as a housekeeper and at Webster’s Jewelry Store in Salina. She married George M. Larson on April 12, 1940, and was very involved in their farming operation. Over a long span of membership at Salemsborg Lutheran Church, she taught Sunday school for 13 years, was in charge of the Cradle Roll and was active in Dorcas Society, later WELCA. A 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star, she served as Past Matron of Felicity Chapter, Lindsborg, Kan., and was a district aide and grand representative to New Brunswick, Canada. In 1992, she moved to Whitewater, where she became a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Fort Atkinson, and attended Community of Christ the Servant Church in Whitewater. She was preceded in death by her parents; a beloved stepfather, Roy Lindgren; her husband, George, of 44 years; a brother, Harold Robert Fear; and a sister, Mary Lundgren. She is survived by two daughters. Martha Kuhlman, of Germantown, Md., and Ann (Ron) Olson, of Port Isabel, Texas; a son; Steven (Leota) Larson, of Whitewater; three grandchildren, Stacey (Larson) Moran, of Moorpark, Calif., Ryan (Olga) Larson, of Corvallis, Ore., and the Rev. Michelle Kuhlman, of Carrollton, Ga.; and a sister, Jean (Lawrence) Danielson, of Boulder, Colo. Also surviving is her “Wisconsin” stepfamily, which greatly enriched her later years. It includes Marc and Kim Taylor and Adam; Kent and Peggy Taylor and Mitchell; Lareena Taylor; Joy Curry and Erika and Lindsey. She was an accomplished seamstress, having made many of her daughters’ clothes as well being a 4-H clothing leader and an employee of King’s Fabric Store in Salina for many years. She was a voracious reader and instilled in her children a love of good books and appreciation of music. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials may be made to Fairhaven Foundation, 435 Starin Rd., Whitewater, WI 53190; Salemsborg Lutheran Church, Smolan, KS, or Trinity Lutheran Church, 314 Barrie St., Fort Atkinson, WI 53538. A memorial service was held Monday, Feb. 9, at Fairhaven Retirement Community, Whitewater, with the Rev. Mike Obinger and the Rev. Kendall Nordstrom officiating. A memorial service will also be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18, at Salemsborg Lutheran Church, Smolan, with the Rev. Michelle Kuhlman and the Rev. Ethan Feistner officiating. Nitardy Funeral Home, Whitewater, and Ryan Mortuary, Salina, are assisting the family. |
