Ima “Jean” Monroe
March 19, 1928 - May 2, 2009

Ima “Jean” Monroe, 81, of Salina, passed away peacefully in her sleep Saturday, May 2, 2009, leaving her family and many dear friends.

Jean was born March 19, 1928. She lost her husband, Herbert Monroe, on April 1, 2009, after a long and wonderful marriage of 62 years. For 30 years, Jean enjoyed working at Roosevelt-Lincoln Middle School in the food service department.

Herb and Jean were blessed with their first child, Kathy, on Jan. 11, 1950. They lost her to cancer Aug. 10, 1997. Their second child, Charles Monroe, was born March 6, 1954. His wife, Penny, joined the family in 1989.

Jean was a caring and devoted grandmother to her granddaughter, Amy Ankrum, of Salina; three stepgrandsons, Josh Wineland, of Andover, and Chauncey and Kelly Kuhl, both of Kansas City; and one stepgranddaughter, Sawyer Wineland, of Andover. Other survivors are a brother, Jay Prather, of Carnegie, Okla.; brother-in-law, Skeet Gibson, of Carnegie, Okla.; many nieces and nephews; and so many special friends.

Preceding her in death are her sisters, Myrtle Gilbert and Norma Gibson; and brothers, Belv, Duane and Bill Prather.

Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Ryan Mortuary, Salina, where family will receive friends from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

Funeral services to celebrate Jean’s life will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 6, at Church of the Cross United Methodist Church, Salina. Burial will be in Gypsum Hill Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of Chuck and Penny Monroe.
