George R. Saunders III
November 25, 1926 - January 6, 2009

MENTOR — George R. Saunders III, 82, Mentor, died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2009. George was born in Pleasanton, to G.R. and Blanche Saunders. A World War II Army Air Force veteran, avid out- doorsman, extensive gardener, golfer and animal lover, he retired from Western Auto after 40 years of service in Kansas City, St. Louis and Salina.

He was preceded in death by two grandsons, Shawn Saunders and Everett Andrews III.

Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Jan Saunders; brother, Bill Saunders, of Garden City; four children, Gail Green, Georgia Saunders, Betsy Saunders and George “Buddy” Saunders, all of Independence, Mo.; two stepchildren, Larry Stitt, of Wichita, and Lorree Stitt, of Salina; mother-in-law, Jeanette Littau, of the home; granddaughter, Meggan Meehleis, of the home; 15 other grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, at Mentor United Methodist Church, Mentor. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 11, at Pleasanton Cemetery, Pleasanton. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the church or the donor’s favorite charity. Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. Eighth St., Salina 67401, is in charge of arrangements.
