Verna Beth Hamel
July 2, 1937 - August 29, 2010

Verna Beth Hamel, 73, of Salina, died in her son's home and joined the Lord on Sunday, Aug. 29, 2010. Beth was born July 2, 1937, in Lincoln County, the daughter of Jesse and Blanche Maze.

Beth spent her school years in Salina and attended Marymount College for two years, majoring in music. Throughout her life, Beth was a wonderful pianist, organist, a gifted seamstress, and a very committed and nurturing grandmother and great-grandmother. She enjoyed baby-sitting and baking cookies with her grandchildren.

Beth spent most of her life as a homemaker and seamstress. She was a devoted member of Grand Avenue United Methodist Church, where she served on the Board of Trustees, the UMW Mary Circle and was the church organist for the past 30 years.

Beth was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Michael Matthew Madden, in 1966, and husband, William Roger Hamel, in 2006.

Beth is survived by her son, Gregory Michael (Mike) Madden and wife Carrie, of Salina; sister, Gaye Lynn Christensen and husband Mike, of Salina; granddaughter, Jennifer Marie McQuillan and husband Billy, of Gypsum; five great-grandchildren, Emma Katherynne, Gage Michael, Scarlett Marie, Cassidy Nicole and Taylor Brooke, all of Gypsum; three stepchildren, Brian Hamel and wife Penny, of Salina, Craig Hamel, of Wichita, and Sandi Santiago and husband Mike, of Wichita; three stepgrandchildren, Arthur Hamel, of Salina, Kendall Dussault and wife Mandi, of Salina, and Loren Santiago, of Wichita; three stepgreat-grandchildren, William and Brayden Dussault, of Salina, and Raven Hamel, of Texas.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 1, at Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. Eighth, Salina where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the mortuary. Officiating will be the Rev. Paul Long. A graveside service will follow in Gypsum Hill Cemetery, Salina, where she will be laid to rest beside her late husband, William Roger Hamel. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Care of Kansas, in care of the mortuary.
