Martha Elizabeth Harvey
October 3, 1911 - January 8, 2010

Martha Elizabeth Harvey, 98, of Salina, died Friday, Jan. 8, 2010. She was born Oct. 3, 1911, in Holdenville, Okla., to John Lewis and Mary Alice (Malone) Coffman.

She graduated from Oklahoma University with a degree in Music Education and served as president of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority. Following graduation, she taught vocal music in Shidler, Okla., where she met Hugh Burton Harvey, an instructor of instrumental music. In 1935, they were married in Holdenville, and they resided in Shidler until 1937.

From 1937 until 1944, they lived in Hiawatha, and from 1944 until 1961, they lived in Topeka, where Mr. Harvey was the instrumental music director at Highland Park schools. They moved to Salina in 1961.

Martha worked as a secretary in the Kansas Wesleyan University development office.

She was a member of the PEO, University United Methodist Church, Kansas Wesleyan University Alumni Association, was active in the Salina Symphony Guild, worked on the election board at Meadowlark School, and was an active bridge player.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh Burton Harvey, in 1980; and a son, Leland Taylor Harvey, in 2000. Survivors include a son, Robert Malone Harvey, of Garrison, N.Y.; daughter, Sarah Burton Harvey, of San Antonio; and 10 nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 14, at Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. Eighth St., Salina 67401, with the Rev. Mike Rose officiating. Inurnment will be later in Greenwood Cemetery, Council Grove. Memorials may be made to Good Samaritan Fund at Salina Presbyterian Manor, 2601 E. Crawford, Salina 67401.
