Viola W. Miller, 101, passed away Saturday, Aug. 14, 2010, at Salina Presbyterian Manor. She was born Feb. 26, 1909, in rural Saline County to A.W. and Augusta (Johnson) Peterson and was the youngest of eight children. She graduated from Falun High School. On Dec. 25, 1937, she was married to Vernon Miller. They lived on the family farm near Assaria until they moved to Salina in 1982. Viola was a homemaker, devoted wife and loving mother to her daughters, Jeannine and Karen. She was a lifelong member of Salemsborg Lutheran Church, Smolan, and was baptized, confirmed and married in the church. Viola had served as a Sunday school teacher and sang in the choir. She was also an active member of the Women of the ELCA. After moving to Salina, she enjoyed singing with the Senior Center RSVP chorus. She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers; three sisters; her husband, Vernon, in 1986; and a daughter, Karen, in 2008. Survivors include her daughter, Jeannine Pihl and husband Norman, of Salina; grandson, Jeff Pihl and wife Amanda, of Larkspur, Colo.; and granddaughter, Jennifer Gregg, of Salina. Also surviving are four great-grandchildren, Tori, Madison and Cade Pihl, and Ella Gregg. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 20, at Salemsborg Lutheran Church, Smolan, with private family burial in Salemsborg Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. Eighth St., Salina 67401, with family present from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to the church window fund or Salina Presbyterian Manor, in care of the mortuary. |
