LeVoy Nelson
August 25, 1913 - August 11, 2010

LeVoy Nelson, 96, of Salina, died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2010. He was born Aug. 25, 1913, in Assaria to Herman and Ida (Olson) Nelson. He attended Sunflower Elementary School and graduated from Assaria High School. He was an elementary school teacher and elementary school principal for 38 years. He attended Bethany College and earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education in 1953 from Fort Hays State University and his Master's degree in Elementary Administration from Fort Hays State University in 1956. He earned additional graduate hours from Kansas State University and Emporia State University.

He started teaching at Fore School (District 13), a rural school in Saline County, and was there for four years, 1938 to 1942. He was a teacher of seventh and eighth grades and principal at Brookville Grade School for six years, 1946 to 1953. He was a seventh- and eighth-grade teacher and principal of Smolan Grade School from 1953 to 1955. He was elementary art supervisor in Lyons elementary schools, Lyons, from 1955 to 1956. From 1956 to January 1960, he was a fifth- and sixth-grade teacher at Hageman School in Salina. In January 1960, he was appointed the first principal of the new elementary school in southeast Salina, Grace E. Stewart School, where he served as principal for 20¬½ years. When he retired in 1980, he was honored to have the LeVoy Nelson Library at the school named after him.

He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, Salina, where he served as a Sunday school teacher, as a Sunday school superintendent and on the church council.

He was a life member of the National Education Association; a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 1432, Salina; a 40-year member of Sunset Kiwanis Club; a 45-year member of the Association for Childhood Education International; member of the American Legion; member of the Salina Area Retired Teachers; member of the Kansas Retired Teachers; member of the National Retired Teachers Association; and a volunteer at the Salina Food Bank.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, in which he served with the 95th Infantry division and the 97th Infantry Division for four years from 1942 to 1946. He served as company clerk with the rank of Sergeant. He also had foreign service in Europe and the Occupation of Japan.

He is survived by a sister, Berneta Forsberg, of Lindsborg; a cousin, Angela Peterson (Ivan), of Salina; a sister-in-law, Alvina Nelson, of Salina; three nieces, Ronita Schultz (Gary), of Kansas City, Kan., and Sondra Forsberg and Doreen McDowell (Steve), both of Salina; and two nephews, Roger Forsberg (Pat), of Clinton, Ill., and Ron Nelson (Loretta), of Richmond, Va.

Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. Eighth, Salina 67401.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 16, at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 737 E. Magnolia, Salina 67401, with the Rev. Christopher Hawkins officiating. Burial will be in Assaria Lutheran Cemetery, Assaria.
