Clinton “Wayne” Phelps, 87, of Salina, died Friday, Jan. 8, 2010. He was born July 27, 1922, on the Elkhorn in Ellsworth County to Lester and Mabel (Smith) Phelps. He grew up on the farm and joined the Navy during World War II, serving three years at Pearl Harbor. On Oct. 8, 1948, Mr. Phelps married Mildred Darlene Yordy. Wayne attended Kansas City Trade School for electrical and refrigeration. He retired from Asbury Hospital in 1987 as an electrician. He was a member of Bel Air Southern Baptist Church and the Wichita Hudson Car Club. He was preceded in death by two grandchildren and a brother, Alvin. Survivors include his wife, Darlene, of the home; five children, Marjorie Powell and husband Dennis, Becky Walters and husband Bob, and Tom Phelps and wife Kim, all of Salina, Larry Phelps and wife Connie, of Abilene, and Susan Jameson and husband Larry, of Archbold, Ohio; three brothers, Lloyd, Dallas and Robert Phelps; a sister, Roberta Albright; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 11, at Bel Air Southern Baptist Church, 1100 W. Cloud, Salina 67401, with burial following at Prairie Mound Cemetery, rural Ellsworth County. Visitation will be from noon to 4 p.m. today at Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. Eighth St., Salina 67401, with family receiving friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Memorials may be made to the church chair lift fund and may be sent to or left in care of the mortuary. |
