He served in the United States Air Force. On Dec. 4, 1952, he married Bessie Marie Sisson in Salina. He lived most of his life in Salina. He worked as a wool presser for the Wardrobe Cleaners, Salina. Later, he was employed as a salesman for Anderson Brothers, Gamble-Robinson Co. and Food Services of America, all of Salina. He retired in 1994.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, David James Spaeny, in 2010.

Survivors include his wife, Bessie Marie, of the home; daughter, Sheryl Sigwing and husband Chris, of Douglass, Kan.; brother, John Spaeny Sr. and wife Becky, of Assaria, Kan.; and two sisters, Betty Brady and husband Lawrence and Helen Jenkins, all of Salina.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. 8th, Salina, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Friday, July 30, 2010, at the mortuary, with Rev. Paul Long officiating. Burial will in Gypsum Hill Cemetery, Salina. Memorials may be made to the V.F.W. Auxiliary, Salina.
