Philip Wendell Berg, 68, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his wife, family, loved ones and close friends. Phil as he was called by everyone, was born on October 3, 1948 in the small town of Winfield, to John and Bonnie Berg.
Phil grew up in Arkansas City with his parents and siblings. Soon after graduating high school, Phil went on to K-State. During college, he held various jobs on campus. Also picking up employment with Dillon's grocery store as a bagger in 1964 where he continued into a career as store manager for over 30yrs before his retirement. After his brief retirement Phil became employed with Wal-Mart in Salina starting in the meat market, then the deli and soon moving into the Assistant Manager program where he continued for several years before he retired.
Phil met Liz in 1995 and they were married on November 30, 1996. Phil and Liz Berg ran a successful foster home for many children of various ages, helping them with goals of education and being successfully reunited with their parents. Within their foster career Phil and Liz adopted a daughter, Lyndsi Engle.
Phil was loved by many, he was a dedicated father, husband, uncle, friend, colleague, sponsor and mentor. There are very few people, if any who could say anything unkind about him. He took care of his family without hesitation or question and his friends always knew he could be depended on. He loved to travel and lived life to the fullest. It was a rare occasion to see him without a smile and if there was an issue he would always do what he could to help. Phil was genuinely a good person inside and out and will be missed by all who had the pleasure to know him.
Phil is preceded in death by both his parents John and Bonnie Berg and Daughter in Spirit Angie Bell.
Survived by his wife Liz Berg and their children as follows, Jennifer and husband Will Crandell of Colorado, Rebecca Berg and Husband Paul Wakino of Colorado, Stephanie Berg of Colorado, Kristina and Robbie Simmons of Topeka KS, Hannah and Brandon Uhlrig of Topeka Ks, Lyndsi Engle of Salina Ks and Michele Berg of Salina Ks; siblings, Mark Berg and wife Jan of Vancouver, Washington, Christine Walker of Winfield, Kansas, Barbara and husband Terry Sweet of Winfield, Kansas, Hal Berg and Dena of Ark City, Kansas; uncle Don Berg of Texas; children in Love and Spirit, Angela Cartwright, Kylie Beachler-Sotelo, Gina Cashman, Kori Martin, Cody Engle, Dominique Barbour-Blocker ; many grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Memorial service will be 3:00 p.m. Saturday, September 9, at Ryan Mortuary. Following the service, the family invites you to a life celebration at 321 N. Santa Fe from 4-7 p.m. a dinner (chicken) will be provided, please bring a side. Also include memories and stories of Phil.
