Ruth Marie Detter Cox, 74, of Salina, passed away Oct, 20, 2017, in Wichita. She was born Sept. 9, 1943, in Nickerson, to Harold and Evelyn (Newcom) Detter.
She received her undergraduate and graduate degrees from Emporia State and was a school teacher and librarian. She had taught school in Garden City, Valley Center, Hutchinson, Independence, Mo., and Dallas, Texas. Ruth had also served as Director of Library Services at Kansas Wesleyan University. Additionally, she served as librarian at St. Johnís Military School and assistant librarian at Nashotah House Episcopal Seminary, Nashotah, Wis. She was a past president of the NEA in Independence, Mo., and was very active in Delta Kappa Gamma serving as a past president of her local chapter and as state executive secretary and state webmaster.
She married Rev. Canon James R. Cox, July 20, 1977 in Kansas City, Mo., and played a very active role throughout his ministry including directing the boys choir at St. Johnís Military School, organist for the Bennington Episcopal Church, and a choir member of Christ Cathedral.
She is survived by: her husband, Rev. Canon James R. Cox, of the home; her sons, Michael (Cindy) of Florence, Colo., Patrick (Teresa) of Canon City, Colo., and James (Michelle) of Gilbert, Ariz.; daughter, Rachael Hoffman (Mark) of Littleton, Colo.; brothers, Roger Detter (Linda) of Scottsdale, Ariz., J.D. Detter (Sandra) of Alma, Ark., and Steve Detter (Debbie) of St. Louis, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 26, at Christ Cathedral, 138 S. 8th St., Salina, celebrated by The Rt. Revíd. Michael Milliken, Episcopal Bishop of Kansas, with inurnment in Nashotah House, Nashotah, Wisc.
