Merle Joseph Martin, 93, of Salina, formerly of Concordia, Kan. passed away on Wednesday, November 29th, 2017 at Salina Regional Health Center. Merle was born August 21st, 1924 to John and Mary (Fagan) Martin in Kimeo, Kan. in rural Washington County. He graduated from Greenleaf High School in 1943, and soon after entered the Navy. He served 3 years, and was a radioman on the USS Lindsey in the South Pacific Naval Fleet during WWII. He saw duty at Iwo Jima, where he survived the bombing of his ship by Japanese kamikaze pilots.
He was united in marriage to Audrey Long of Linn, Kan. in 1946 while on leave from duty in Washington DC. They made their home in Linn, were Merle was a depot agent for the Missouri Pacific Railroad. They were the adoptive parents of two children, Richard and Rachelle. Audrey preceded Merle in death in 1966. In 1973 he married Dorine (Meyer) Long. Dorine had two daughters, Janeen and Barb Long both of Salina. In 1974, they moved to Concordia where Merle was customer services manager for the MoPac Railroad and later the Union Pacific Railroad until he retired in 1987 with 40 years of service.
Merle was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Dorine; step-daughter, Janeen Long; six brothers and one sister.
He is survived by his children, Rick and Shelly; step-daughter, Barb Long; granddaughter, Adie (Martin) Fields and husband Brad; sister, Velma (Martin) Schuette and husband Art; three grandchildren, Blake, Morgan and Kamdyn Fields; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Monday, December 4th, with a rosary at 5:30 p.m. at Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. Eighth Street, Salina. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, December 5th at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 1000 Burr Oak Lane in Salina. Burial will be at the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Greenleaf, Kan.
