Betty Louise Brown Chalfant Sutton, of Salina, died Friday, May 22, 2015. She was born June 3, 1921, in Burlington, Colo., to Ned and Mary (Peirce) Brown. She is survived by her daughter, Nedra (Chalfant) Elbl, of Salina; son, Jack (Janet) Chalfant, of Manchester, Mo.; three stepchildren, W. Ron (Joey) Sutton, of Pleasanton, Calif., L. Paul (Lori) Sutton, of El Cajon, Calif., and Diana (Bill) VanCleve, of Redwood, Calif.; seven grandchildren, John (Tricia) Elbl, of Boston, Tara (Ryan) Lafferty, of Rockford, Mich., Lindsay (Jason) DeBuhr, of Charlotte, N.C., Dustin (Kristen) Chalfant, of Kirkwood, Mo., Curtis (Siarah) Sutton, of Hayward, Calif., Mark Sutton, of Hollywood, Calif., and Roberta (Chris Kelly) Sutton, of Brooklyn, N.Y.; 12 great-grandchildren; one niece, nephews and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ned and Mary Louise Brown; sister, Ruth Bruner; brother, Fred Brown; first husband, John Matthew Chalfant, and second husband, William Lester Sutton. Betty graduated from Burlington High School and faithfully attended the Class of '39 reunions and years of monthly coffees with her classmates. Her friends were especially dear to her. She was a secretary at Grand Junior High School and a homemaker. Betty was an active member of Order of the Eastern Star, having received her 50-year pin in 1992. She also belonged to PEO, BPW, Hospital Auxiliary, Sherman-Wallace County Farmers Home Administration, Circle 5 and the United Methodist Church. She received the Friend of Education award from the state of Kansas. She loved playing the piano and organ, sewing and nurturing her flower and fruit gardens. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her pride and joy. Celebration of Life service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 18, 2015, at Trinity United Methodist Church, Salina. Inurnment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Order of the Eastern Star 122 in Goodland, Trinity United Methodist Church, Eaglecrest Retirement Center or Hospice of Salina, in care of Ryan Mortuary, Salina.
